5 Ways to Identify and Uplift Your Child’s Talent

The role of parents is the biggest influence in shaping their child’s personality. The way they communicate with their child, their involvement level to a large extent impacts a child’s personality and abilities.

It is often observed that parents practice extreme behaviour with their children either by being too caring or by being a tough disciplinarian. However, parents should maintain the right balance between being sensitive and strict. It is the responsibility of parents to help the child grow into a mature and confident person.

Moreover, child development is an outcome of both the nature of the child as well as the nurture he/she receives.

In this blog, we will describe 5 ways of recognising a child’s ability:

  • Opportunities – Every individual is gifted with different abilities. Talents and abilities need opportunities to develop. The unrealised potential in the fundamental years of a child become a hindrance in their development in the later years. Opportunities are the key to every child’s development. For example, a child has a hidden talent for painting beautiful pictures. But he/she will be unaware of the fact if the child has never made a stroke with a paintbrush.

Therefore, parents should make it a point to provide their child with an ample range of activities so that their children can discover and enhance their talents – be it in sports, games, arts or academics. After parents spot their child’s talents and interests, they should find out creative outlets that broaden their understanding. If a child has a flair for writing, make them participate in a story writing competition. If you observe an actor in them, make a theatre trip with them. Open the doors of opportunities wherever you can!

  • Constant Analysis – Always be on the lookout for skills in your child. Set apart some time each day to observe their habits, preferences, and activities. It is an enjoyable part of parenting. Continue observing when they play or watch something, enjoy and celebrate with them. When playing with them, let them take the lead and direct the game.

  • Ask Questions – Identifying their talents includes listening to them sincerely. Ask them questions in order to learn more about them. Learn how they draw inferences from a given situation or a scene. Find out how they reach a conclusion and what were their thoughts and feelings developed during the process. Ask them to explain you a situation, praise them, smile and always encourage them.

  • Encourage – Small words of encouragement can do wonders. Cheer and appreciate them as they take each tiny step in this journey called life. Never get demotivated because of failure. Tell them a failure at certain levels is good. Make them believe that failure teaches to cope up with difficulties and build resilience in them.

  • Be patient – As a parent, it is always good to practice patience and understanding. Even during worse circumstances, reflect patience which becomes an affirmation in their abilities. Always keep in mind that they are naive in this game of life, still learning and experimenting. While they are learning, growing, falling and succeeding in life, never hold them back.
